Film Noir was a name attached to films covering the era from the 1930s through the 1950s.? It was a statement of how the world felt about the overwhelming devastation of The Great Depression
For me these films are an art experience and are sometimes cerebral in the better ones, designed to transcend from the norms into an unnerving black universe.? A single frame of the film stands alone as an intriguing image. Odd building-angle shots skewed high and low, unique disjointed editing and smoky silhouettes all work together to create a unique artform. ?Black and white, shades of gray and the dramatic shadow patterns draw me into the mysterious mood.
Lightning fast, rapid back and forth dialogue with a dry sense of humor all combine to make it an escapist genre for me. ?Modern films in color usually depict realistic slower speech with all the hesitations we have. ?Film Noir shows me a different world from the vantage point of an outside philosopher.
After the Depression people worldwide realized there’s an extremely unequal playing field in the economic system. ?Just having money makes a lot more, creating a system that “the game is rigged.”? My own take on this stems from both sides of my family being robbed of fortunes in 1920 and 1931 by banks.
People were wondering how to deal with the situation.? The twisted desires of a few of the hard-boiled characters put them on a tightrope between good and evil. ?Makes me wonder: how would I deal with this situation in the film?
